Richard Drake

Author of “Nirvana by Installments” “I was inspired by a radio program produced by David Suzuki in 1989. In it he suggested that one person can make a difference in environmental protection. Being a relatively new parent at the time, it struck me that it would be hard to tell my son some years on that I did nothing. I had been a tree planter, and saw the ravages that clear-cut logging had inflicted on the BC wilderness. I figured if many of these trees were becoming pulp to make paper, then recycling paper could reduce the number cut. So I found myself at the office of the local government staff-person in charge of landfills, asking how I would start a recycling program. From that point on, everything changed. I knew without a doubt that I wanted to do something, and that recycling and waste reduction had a large part to do with it. I started talking to the community - and we had no recycling - and before long I was the head of a non-profit called CARE - Citizens For Action for Recycling and the Environment. Before long we had secured funding to run the region's first recycling program, Comox Valley Recycling. Even though I began knowing nothing about project management (I was educated as an electronic engineer and started life in music production), I was asked to be the manager, and from that point on, I never looked back. : Waste is not Waste until you Waste it. I walk the talk of a conserver lifestyle. I am a citizen, not a consumer. I treasure the planet that we live on, and try to encourage others to hold it in the same reverence that I do. My work is informed in the belief that we are connected to everything - that separation is an illusion that creates many of the problems in the world.”
