Hi.

Welcome to Upcycle Vancouver.

concAUCTION

On Tuesday May 10, I made an ask a RADIUS’s concAUCTION event. ConcAUCTION is an event where the fellows from the RADIUS Social Innovation program each have 60 seconds to make an ask of the audience. If an audience member thinks they can help in some way they raise their hands and someone comes and puts a sticky note with the number of the asker on them. After the asking portion is over, fellows go around and find the people who have their number on them and find out how they can help! This sounds complex, but in reality is super fun!

All of the people who came to the event were more than willing to help and engage with us fellows and we received so much support! Modelled after an auction, this was a great way to design the event, because it’s strategic, in that you talk to people who are interested in your initiative, and it’s fun in that you run around searching for people with a matching number and having so many interesting conversations because of it.

My ask for Upcycle Vancouver was for spaces that are in need to design that we can use to showcase upcycling. These could be community spaces that need activation, spaces in your business that need furniture or interior design, public spaces, private spaces, or any project that someone is doing or wants to do, that involves building something, temporary or permanent.

For example, this summer we have partnered with the Strathcona BIA to throw a block party for 100 in 1 day where the space is designed using reclaimed materials. We also have a project coming up with the Museum of Vancouver and an artist in order to create an art installation inside the museum that uses salvaged materials to teach the public about the importance of reuse.

Lastly, I mentioned that we can help connect you with ideas, designers, builders, and materials for your project so that you can become a champion of upcycling.

I got a lot of great opportunities, suggestions, and feedback. I also met a lot of great people who want to become champions or who have an interest in upcycling as well! Watch out for some awesome future projects we will be collaborating on with some of these concAUCTION givers.

To hear more about the event itself and what some of the other awesome radical doers asked for, read Laura Cuthbert’s blog here.

A special thanks for Jackie Dives for the wonderful photos of the event.
